vista improve over time

Vista improve over time?

Hear rumors that the speed of vista improves over time (2 days or so) of running? Any truth to this?

No. You just adjust to it.

Well, as better hardware is released and maintenance updates (Service Packs) are released and you give Vista more memory, yes, the performance will improve greatly. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

No, while you install more programs it will get even slower too.

Maybe I'm an oddball, but yes, I think Vista has slightly improved for me (has been installed now for 24 hours). Although this is prob just from me tinkering with settings.

I believe what you're hearing and what the other replies here might be missing is that after a few days you will notice less disk thrashing due to the indexer gathering the complete listing of your file system over time. After a few days this is not necessary except when there are new programs installed and fewer changes to the file system.
So in this sense... yes, it does appear to get a little better speed wise since the CPU and hard drive aren't getting thrashed creating greater contention while using the system. But you can also turn off the indexer if you wish. I would suggest leaving the machine on overnight for the first few days for those that are in the habit of powering down at the end of the day.

It takes several hours to index everything. The indexing slows things down until it is finished.

My experience with windows is that it runs slower the longer you own it. No joke :D

I also found the defragmenter hammering my drive (it's scheduled to run automatically and it was defragging my windows.old files). The new Performance Diagnostic Console helped me find that out (love that!). Drove me crazy. Solution? Re-install with format! haha! Nice and fast and quiet now.

A feature that is "supposed" to make Vista faster after you use it in a similar manner for awhile is SuperFetch. It is supposed to intelligently learn how you use your computer and optimize(not just defragment) your hard drive so the computer will be faster to swap into and out of disk.
